Bon Dance Festival
Event Info
Upcoming date: August 16, 2025
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Bon dances on Maui are a vibrant summer tradition rooted in Japanese Buddhist customs, honoring the spirits of ancestors through music, dance, and community gathering. Each year from June through mid-August, Buddhist temples across the island host Bon dances, which are open to everyone—residents and visitors alike. The festivities begin with a service to remember departed loved ones, followed by lively circle dances performed under lantern-lit skies to the beat of taiko drums and Japanese folk songs. The atmosphere is festive and welcoming, with local food booths, taiko performances, and opportunities for newcomers to join in the dancing regardless of experience. SImply watch the people around you to learn the dance moves.
